The ancient cities were not only towns or urban settlements, they were also the heart of small states called city-states. A small part of its inhabitants – not all of them, indeed, far from it – were also citizens, with special rights and duties. But citizenship in ancient Greece also extended to lifestyles and behaviours, which varied from one city to another and evolved over time. At the first sight, it was therefore possible to distinguish in the crowd who was a citizen and who was not.
