During the Middle Ages, Greek cities were progressively forgotten. The Ottoman empire, after the fall of Constantinople, reached its peak by achieving its conquest of Greece in the seventeenth century. During the Renaissance and the Modern Era, various readings of Ancient authors allowed people to rediscover the Ancient Times. Maps of Greece were drawn from written description. The interest for the Greek territories kept on increasing during the eighteenth century. Publications of travel journals to the Levant multiplied. This growing interest for the Ancient Times motivated the Dilettanti's Society to fund missions. This society was composed of rich and passionated men. The goal was to organise and finance expeditions to Greece or elsewhere in order to expend the Ancient knowledge.
