 Summary

Contrary to our industrial and post-industrial expectations and perspectives, ancient cities didn’t marginalise, neither geographicaly nor socially, industrial districts. Workshops and shops were integrated within the urban fabric of the city, in the private sphere of the house and in the religious domain of sanctuaries. Spaces of commercial activities are identified on the base of the architectural designs of shops and workshops. Shops feature large openings onto the street, in order to maximise interaction with the clients. Workshops can be identified by the production activities that they host.
